BACKGROUND
The Bradley Fighting Vehicle was designed to transport a squad
of infantry around the battlefield as well as to conduct scouting
missions. The Bradley's weaponry allows it to support of mounted
and dismounted infantry and defeat enemy tanks. The Bradley also
has good cross country speed and is able to keep up with the M1
Abrams MBT. The Bradley Fighting Vehicle currently come in two
varients, the M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle and the M3 Calvary
Fighting Vehicle. The M2 Bradley's role is to; safely transport
infantry to the battlefield, provide firepower for it's
dismounted infantry, and to destroy any enemy tanks and other
vehicles that threaten it's infantry. The Bradley's main armanent
is the single barreled M242 25mm Bushmaster Chain Gun. The gun
has an integrated dual-feed mechanism that allows the gunner to
change ammo types with a flick of a switch. Either armor piercing
or high explosive ammunition may be carried. The gunner can fire
individual rounds or in bursts. The gun has a firing rate of 200
rounds per minuet and a range of 2000 meters. In addition to the
25mm gun the Bradley also mounts a M240C 7.62mm machine gun to
the right of the Bushmaster, for use against unarmored targets.
For use against enemy tanks the Bradley carries two ready to fire
TOW Anti-Tanks Missiles. The launcher is mounted on the left side
of the turret. To fire the missiles the Bradley must be stopped,
unlike the guns which can be fired while on the move. After the
missiles are fired, the launcher is reloaded by the infantry
inside. A special hatch provides protection while the launcher is
being reloaded. The TOW missile has a range of 4 km and can
destroy any armored vehicle with deadly accuracy. The M3 Calvary
Fighting Vehicle uses the same chasis as the M2 IFV, with some
internal differences. Designed as a calvary/scout vehicle and
carries a pair of scouts, additional radios, ammunition and
missiles. The only visible difference between the M2 and the M3
is the lack of firing ports on the M3.
The M2A3 and M3A3 have recieved many computer upgrades over
older models and can transmit, recieve, store, and display
digital messages. They also have improved automation and fire
control systems, with a second generation FLIR. A GPS navigation
systems has also been installed to enhance situational awareness.
The Bradley is constructed from welded aluminum with suplimental
laminate armor in critical locations. Later models from M2A2 on
have additional steel applique armor added with provision for 105
explosive reactive tiles. The added armor systems help protect
the Bradley from ballistic ammunition and shaped charges. The
Bradley has prooven to be a successful vehicle and has been
widley exported.
