NAVY HELICOPTER

BACKGROUND

The Lynx is a popular helicopter with multiple models in use, the latest being the Super Lynx and an upgrade package for the Super Lynx known as the Super Lynx 300 is planned soon. The Lynx is a multi-role helicopter for Anti-Surface Warfare, Anti-Submarine Warfare, search and rescue and utility operations. Over 200 naval Lynx helicopters are operational with eleven navies and are battle proven in two major conflicts, (Falklands & Gulf Wars.) Over 200 Lynx scout/attack helicopters, (Mark 7 & 9,) have also been produced. The UK Royal Navy is equipped with the Lynx Mark 8 helicopters whereas the British Army fields Mk 7 and Mk 9 Lynx Scout/Attack helicopters which are identical in every way except for the Chin Radome and weapons layout.

The Lynx is capable of operating in every environment as the Lynx's engines are fully marinised engines for operation in harsh erosive and corrosive environments, from desert and tropical conditions to freezing and arctic environments. The Lynx airframe is constructed of a composite of light alloys. The helicopter also features a non-retractable tricycle-type landing gear is designed for the helicopter to operate from small ships in State 6 Sea's and features oleo-pneumatic struts which absorb the shock of a 6ft/s descent rate.

1. MATRA BAE DYNAMICS SEA SKUA ANTI-SHIP MISSILES SEA SKUA is an all weather, day/night sea skimming anti-ship missile. It is equipped with a semi-active radar homing head and has demonstrated its high hit capability, reliability and low life cycle costs in operations with both the Royal Navy and other navies worldwide, and in two wars, (Falklands and Gulf Wars.)

STANDARD EQUIPMENT FOR THE AGUSTA WESTLAND MARK 8 LYNX:

• DIGITAL FLIGHT SYSTEM: The Mark 8 Lynx features FADEC (Full Authority Digital Electronic Control) for advanced control of the Helicopter which gives it a high state of manouverabilty compared to other Helicopters.
• AUTO-PILOT: The Lynx is equipped with a computerized auto-pilot. The auto-pilot can be programmed with a single destination or a complex flight plan involving multiple speeds, directions, and destinations. The onboard computer will alert the pilot when the craft is near its destination. The automatic flight control system includes a cable hover mode control
• COMBAT COMPUTER W/HUD DISPLAYS: The Lynx features a Combat Computer that is able to identify aircraft that its radar picks up and can display the information to one of the seven colour active matrix liquid crystal displays. The system is able to identify up to 500 targets at one time.
• IFF: The Helicopter has an IFF, (Identification Friend or Foe,) system that when switched on identifies to other aircraft the Helicopters designation and country of origin. This system ensures that friendly aircraft do not fire on the Lynx.
• OPTICS: CAMERA/INFRARED/THERMAL IMAGER: Range: 30 miles (48 km). Vipa 1 reconnaissance pod and Sea Owl thermal imager from BAE SYSTEMS. Sea Owl is fitted on a gimballed mount in the nose of the helicopter, above the radar. Super Lynx has a forward-looking infrared system for passive target identification.
• DECK LOCKING SYSTEM: The Lynx features a hydraulically operated harpoon deck lock securing system to secure the helicopter to the deck. The main wheels can be toed out allowing the aircraft to turn into the wind while the decklock harpoon remains engaged.
• RADAR: 150 mile (240 km) range. The MK8 Lynx features the Seaspray Mark 1 radar housed in a modified chin radome on the front of the Helicopter.
• SONAR: 50 mile (80 km) range. Allied Signal AN/AQS-18 active dipping sonar attached to a hydraulically powered winch. The automatic flight control system includes a cable hover mode control
• RADIO COMMUNICATION: Long range, directional communications system with satellite relay capabilities. Range: 600 miles (960 km) or can be boosted indefinitely via satellite relay.
• STANDARD SURVIVAL KIT: All Helicopter Crews flightsuits come equipped with portable survival equipment. The equipment includes a small waterproof radio/homing signal, a medium-sized flashlight, two hand flares, one rocket flare, a compass, a small mirror, a pocket knife, dehydrated and concentrated food (can be stretched into a five day supply for one person) and basic first aid items (aspirin, bandages, disinfectants, etc,) plus a life jacket flotation device.
