BACKGROUND

The Sea King helicopter is one of the most recognisable helicopters in the world which is not suprising as it has been around for over a quarter of a century and is in service with over a dozen different countries. Originally developed by Sikorsky, Augusta Westland managed to obtain a licence to manufacture the Sea King to the specifications of the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. Augusta Westland developed for the Royal Navy an anti-submarine warfare helicopter (HAS, Helicopter Anti-Submarine,) a Search and Rescue (SAR) version of the Sea King, (also used by the Royal Air Force,) and an Airborne Early Warning (AEW) version. The Sea King is truly the work horse of the Royal Navy as it covers all of these area's plus troop and equipment/supply transportation.
