BACKGROUND

The Harrier is the only truly operational V/STOL, (Vertical/Short Take Off and Landing,) jet aircraft in the world. The harrier works around a single powerful engine with four rotatable nozzles which enable the aircraft to work from anywhere in the world, from aircraft carriers to airfields, to open country with very little room to manouver. The Harrier FA2 is a single seat multi-role day/night all-weather aircraft, whose roles are inter-changeable between Air Defence and Surface Attack depending on what the situation requires. Optimised for operations from Naval Carriers, it's short take-off and vertical landing capability has greatly expanded the ability of the Invincible class of Aircraft Carriers to project air power in support of the United Kingdom. The Harrier is responsible for Air Defence for the Fleet at sea and has the secondary roles of reconnaissance, strike and close air support. Equipped with the advanced Blue Vixen multi-mode Pulse Doppler Radar, and armed with the AMRAAM missile makes the Harrier one of the world's most potent naval fighters.

The Harrier FA2, commonly referred to as the Sea Harrier, can be found in the service of the Royal Navy and the Indian Navy, providing Air Defence for the Fleet. Although the aircraft is optimised for air-to-air combat it is also designed with the ability to undertake missions of surveillance, air-to-sea and air-to-ground attack. The FA2 is the latest version of the Sea Harrier in service with the Royal Navy (28 aircraft) which will be replaced with the Joint Strike Fighter presently under development. However the land based version of the Harrier, the GR-7 will be upgraded to the GR-9. The American licenced version of the GR-7, known as the AV-8 will also remain in use with the US Marine Corp where it is at the moment.

WEAPON SYSTEMS:

The Harrier has 6 hard points, (two on the underside, two on each wing,) for fixing armament to. As the Harrier does not feature any internally mounted weapons it commonly carries two 30mm Gun Pods on its belly mounts.

  1. 30MM ADEN GUN PODS: (2) As the Harrier FA2 does not feature any internally mounted weapons the most common weapon to be fitted to the belly mounts of the Harrier are two 30mm Gun Pods for defence, and ground attack. These Gun Pods carry additional allowing them to be used for ground attack duties.

  2. AIM-120 AMRAAM MISSILES The AMRAAM, (Advanced Medium Range Air to Air Missile,) is a medium range missile weapon of the Harrier, allowing it to engage and destroy enemy aircraft at a range of almost 50 miles. The AMRAAM is unlike its predecessors is capable of detonating in close proximity to its target rather than having to actually strike it.

  3. AIM-9M SIDEWINDER MISSILES Designed for close in dogfights the Sidewinder missile is a reliable albeit under powered missile. It is still capable however of more than adequately taking out any other fighter out of combat.

  4. ECM JAMMER Used to defeat hostile radar, the ECM, (Electronic Counter Measures,) jammer will confuse all radar so that the fighter can not be detected or locked onto with radar guided weapons. This does not give away the position of the fighter but it does let the enemy know that they are there. The only way that it can be defeated is with ECCM, (Electronic Counter-Counter Measures.)

  5. BAE SYSTEMS AN/ALE-40 CHAFF/FLARE DECOY DISPENSORS: Located in the rear middle section of the Harrier fuselage are the counter-measures dispensors. Triggered by the pilot they will release either a chaff cloud or single flare depending on what the pilot chooses. They are used to confuse enemy missiles attacking the Harrier FA2. Smart missiles get a 20% bonus when rolling on the below chart.
