BACKGROUND

Construction of the largest cruisers in the world, the Kirov class, began in 1974. The Admiral Ushakov (ex-Kirov), the first of the class, was commissioned. Originally there were to be 12 ships in the Kirov class but budget problems kept those plans from being realized. The fourth and last of the class the Peter Velikiy was finally commisioned in 1998, nearly 9 years after it was launched. A fifth ship the Kuznetsov was scrapped in 1992 before construction was completed. As each ship was constructed several years apart, there are substantial differences in equipment.

The class was originally designed to hunt enemy ballistic submarines. After the introduction to the Granit long range antiship missile the Kirov's roll expanded to engage enemy surface ships, provide air support and submarine protection for naval forces. To carry out these rolls the Kiov is armed with a combination of missiles and cannons. The Kirov's missile systems include 20 Granit anti-ship missiles that can be fired individually or in volley's. While the missiles can not be controlled once launched the missiles do share targeting information. If the lead missile is destroyed another will take it's place. A 1 S-300F Air Defence Missile Complex with 12 launchers and 96 missiles is used against air and surface targets. This system is backed by 2 Osa-Ma double launchers with 40 missiles.

The gun systems differ between ships do to changes in production. The first two ships in the class have two 100mm guns and 8 AK-630 6 barrel 30mm gattling guns to defend against aircraft, missiles, small boats, mines, and lightly armored land targets. The last two ships are armed with the larger 130mm AK-130 multi-purpose two barrel gun is used against aircraft, surface, and shore targets. The first two ships in the class have The last two ships have 6 Combined 30mm gun/SA-N-11 anti-air launchers. This system was an improvement over the older gun system.

The Kirov's anti submarine weapons consist of 10 missile/torpeado tubes with 20 Vodopad-Nk missles/torpeados and two anti-submarine rocket systems. The Udav-1 decoy system with 40 rockets and the RBU-1000 Rocket Mortar with another 102. Also the Kirov can accomodate 3 Makov Ka-27PL or Ka-25RT helicopters.

The ships engines are a combination of nuclear power and steam turbines. At full speed the ship is capable of 31 knots and can operate with out the nuclear engines at a speeds of 14-17 knots with a range of a 1000 miles or 60 days. The engines are located in three separate compartments. One for the nuclear engines and the other two for the turbine units and the steam boilers.

By 1997 only the Admiral Nakhimov remained operational. The Admiral Lazarev was planned to be scrapped due to insufficient funds needed for repairs. The Admiral Ushakov was to be canibalized for parts to repair the Admiral Nakhimov and the Peter Velikiy which had been launched for exceptance trials in 1996.

NOTES:

  1. Depleting the MDC of the main body will put the Cruiser out of commission. All internal systems will shut down, the ship itself will be an unsalvageable sinking wreck.
  2. Destroying the command tower will instantly kill the command staff and deprive the ship of all forms of long range communications, radar and targeting. Destroying the main sensory array behind the command tower will have the same effect, but the command staff will not be killed instantly.
  3. Destroying the flight deck will greatly impair the ships ability to deploy and recover Helicopter.
  4. Depleting the MDC of the propellors will leave the ship adrift until such time as they are repaired or the ship is towed back to port.

  15. KANTATA-M ELECTRONIC WARFARE SUITE: Used to defeat hostile radar and Sonar, the ECM/ESM, (Electronic Counter Measures,) jammers will confuse all radar and sonar so that the ships is much harder to be detected or locked onto with radar/sonar guided weapons. This does not give away the position of the ship but it does let the enemy know that they are there. The only way that it can be defeated is with ECCM, (Electronic Counter-Counter Measures.)

    • PRIMARY PURPOSE: Block Enemy Radar/Sonar
    • RANGE: 30 miles

      01-50 Missile/s detonated by Chaff/Flare
51-75 Missile/s loses track of target and veers away in wrong direction, (may lock onto another target)
76-00 No effect, missile is still on target
    • Payload: Three of each type (per launcher) Reloads are automatic with 3 reloads per launcher before a manual reload is required. Stores hold 10 full reloads of the system.
  17. PK-10 CHAFF/ FLARE DECOY DISPENSORS (12)(Velikiy Only): The cruisers counter-measures dispensors consist of 12 four-barrelled Chaff/Flare launchers. Triggered by the Principal Weapons Officer, (PWO,) they will release either a chaff cloud or single flare depending on what the PWO chooses. They are used to confuse enemy missiles attacking the ship. Smart missiles get a 20% bonus when rolling on the below chart.

  18. RPK-5(RBU-UDAV-1) ACCOUSTIC DECOY LAUNCHER (2): This system deploys a decoy to confuse enemy torpedos. Each system mounts 10 shots with 40 reloads.

      01-50 Torpedo detonated by Decoy
51-75 Torpedo loses track of target and veers away in wrong direction, (may lock onto another target)
76-00 No effect, torpedo is still on target
